Office Hours: This is a completely online course, and office hours are available upon request. We can meet online via Canvas Collaborations or in person at a mutually convenient location (I would prefer at the high school).  I generally respond to email within 12-24 hours.  I will be out of town from July 2 - July 9.  I will still be able to respond to emails and Canvas messages during this time, but will not be able to meet in person.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Algebra 2 is a course that expands on Algebra 1 concepts, and provides further development of the concept of a function.  The expanded topics of the course include the theorems and algorithms of Algebra, polynomials and polynomial functions, rational exponents, the complex numbers, sequences and series, and the properties of graphs.  Further development of probability, with introductions of permutations, combinations, and matrices will be included along with exponential functions.  Problem solving emphasizing practical applications of Algebra will be explored through a variety of problem-solving techniques.  A graphing calculator is required.  It is recommended that you have passed Algebra 1 with a C-.

REQUIRED INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

All readings and instructional materials will be provided in Canvas.  You will not need a textbook, workbook, or any hardcopy print item.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Students must have access to a reliable computer with high-speed internet access, camera, and a headset microphone and/or an iPad with a microphone and camera.  You will need a Texas Instrument Graphing Calculator (TI-83 or TI-84)  You will need some variation of an annotation device (i.e. Educreations and Notability).

PARTICIPATION EXPECTATIONS

Algebra 2, First Semester is a 1-credit, completely online course. There are no required face-to-face sessions, but students will be required to complete the modules in sequential order.  Students will spend approximately 10 hours per week on average completing the required tasks.

Students are expected to complete all assignments by 11:59 p.m. on the scheduled due dates. Failure to do so will result in a 10% deduction per day. Assignments will no longer be accepted after 2 days. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, students are to communicate with their instructor as soon as possible to make necessary accommodations.

HELP-SEEKING STRATEGIES

Please be proactive and seek help whenever possible. The online environment is full of helpful people and resources.  If you are having a problem, reach out to those around you who might be able to help. Consider the following:

  • Discussions. I have created a discussion in Canvas dedicated to questions and ongoing support. For questions regarding assignments, please post your questions here. Chances are, your question will help other students in the class. You are encouraged to also respond to your classmates if you think you can help.

  • Instructor Support. You can contact me anytime using the Canvas mail. This is located in the upper right corner, called “inbox.” I will respond to your emails within 24 hours. You can also use the “help” resource, and select “ask your instructor a question.”

  • Technical Support. If you are having issues with Canvas, you may use the “help” link to search the Canvas guides, or report a problem. As a rule of thumb, try using a different internet browser or reboot your device. For technical support related to your hardware, please notify your teacher and he/she will file a help ticket with the Center Grove Technology Department.

  • Online Support. If you have a question regarding Center Grove Global Campus in general, please contact the Coordinator of Connected Learning, Joe Lamb, at lambj@centergrove.k12.in.us.

DISABILITY SERVICES FOR STUDENTS

If you have special needs that may require modification of instruction or assessment, please make sure a copy of your IEP is on file. You may contact Kathy Stricker, Director of Special Needs at strickerk@centergrove.k12.in.us, so that we can determine how to make necessary accommodations to best support your learning needs.

PLAGIARISM, CHEATING, AND ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

It is expected that students will not cheat, plagiarize, or engage in any other form of academic dishonesty. This behavior includes but is not limited to:

  • using another's thoughts or words as your own without correctly citing the source.

  • giving your thoughts or words to another student in a way that would benefit that student or his/her grade in the course.

  • submitting work created prior to the course in order to earn a grade for an assignment that is to be completed while taking the course.

  • working with another student to complete an assignment, quiz, or test when not explicitly told by the instructor that working with a partner is permitted.

  • submitting a blank assignment so as to blame a "technical issue" for a submission problem when, in reality, you are trying to gain more time in completing the assignment.

GRADING

The following assignments will constitute your grade:

50% - Assessments

30% - Homework, Activities, Discussions

20% - Final Exam *If you fail the final exam, you automatically fail the course*

FINAL EXAM

You can take the final exam on either Thursday, July 21 from 10am - 12pm or Friday, July 22 from 10am - 12pm.  If those two dates do not work, please contact me ASAP to make other arrangements.  Requests are not guaranteed. The final exam will take place in my classroom (room 318) in the high school.  You will need to bring a pencil, a graphing calculator, and your student ID/driver's license for verification.

GRADING SCALE

Grades and assignment feedback will be posted within 48-72 hours of submission, pending an on-time submission. All assignments will be graded on a point basis and final grades will be determined as follows:
